Beef cattle, Dairy cattle( growing out on aggistment and pasture for silage/hay
A mixed farm with sheep (1500 shedding ewes) , 1200 dairy heifers, 50 beef cattle and seed crops.
Also hay and sileage growing / cutting, 200ha of intensive feed crops, and 300ha of centre pivot irrigation crops.
Typical duties
Stock work with manager - weighing, feeding, drenching, moving and treating ill cattle.
At harvest time, driving tractors and harvest machinery.
In the Autumn, sowing pasture.
Fencing, repairs and maintenance.
Bringing on dairy calves.
Riding quad bikes.
The Team:
Paul, Natalie, Nick (5years working there - ex VisitOz), Matthew, (age 29) 13 years there, John 13 years working there (age 61)
Living
Prefers at least 6 months work otherwise not worth the training. Ideal for interns. Paul is very fair and gives everyone a good chance to prove themselves. He has a few different properties so employees should expect some travelling between farms and Paul often recommends they buy their own vehicle. Expect some charge for using his vehicles for personal use. Son of Harry and Ria Janssen.
50 kms from Mt Gambier in SE South Australia. (Mt Gambier is 10 mins from VIC/SA border.)
6 kms from Millicent (population of 5,000).
No food or meals provided.
Mobile phone service and wireless internet available (if have a laptop).
Owner usually organises cars for backpackers to buy.
0-2 days off per week depending on critical times.
Travel
Train from Melbourne to Mt Gambier or Premier Stateliner bus from Adelaide to Millicent
Working conditions and Pay
Award wage, usually per hour. Overtime available but dependent on number of current employees.
