GENERAL INFO
Mill Park Stud is owned and operated by the Watson family: Peter, Serena, and their son Chris. The property was originally purchased by Serena’s father and his brothers in the 1950s. It was initially a cattle and sheep property.
Fine wool Merinos still graze on land surrounding some 2,500 acres of renovated lucerne and veldt pastures, which were established to accommodate horses.
During the early years of Mill Park, Peter and Serena kept a small number of Thoroughbred broodmares as a hobby. The progeny of these mares allowed an early introduction into selling Thoroughbred yearlings commercially.
Their hobby became truly commercial in the early 1990s, with their own interest increasing, and the addition of a large group of broodmares sent to them by Toorak Park Stud.
The small breeding operation has developed into a very successful business, with the farm now accommodating around 200 horses, of which approximately 80 are resident broodmares.
The entire property covers 10,000 acres; the landscape is undulating and limestone-based, this terroir providing a unique and successful environment for raising Thoroughbred youngstock, and ideal restorative conditions for spelling racehorses.
