"During my time at Baramul Stud I had 4 positions, sometimes simultaneously.
Yearling crew (2,5 months): preparing food and feeding the yearlings, brushing them, holding them while the farrier is there, walking them to and from the paddock, doing regular feed runs, checking their general health (eyes, nose, legs), cleaning the barn, emptying and filling boxes, cleaning their boxes multiple times a day
Broodmare crew (1,5 months) : same tasks as yearling crew + helping with foal handling, moving the mares and foals from large paddocks to running yards with the Kubota (“running them in”), helping with veterinary visits and checks, giving medicine to the mares, taking foal temperatures and giving them medicine
Office crew (office tasks for 1 month, driving tasks for 3 months): answering the company landline phone, answering emails, administrative tasks including sorting the fuel sheets and hour sheets from the company’s employees, driving trips to town to pick up order for the stud, driving trips to town to pick up new employees and take them shopping for groceries etc., dropping off employees that are leaving
Babysitting: 3 weeks of looking after 3 boys of 1 to 1,5 years old. They were the sons of some of the fulltime employees at the stud. It involved mostly playing with them, preparing and giving them food, cleaning/changing their nappies, go for walks, trying to get them to take their naps.
