John aims to build up new skills, knowledge and work experience of Australian rural and agricultural life, particularly around livestock.
Back Home
John is from Texas.
He has completed one year of university study in wildlife biology in Alaska, but has decided he wishes to travel and work in around the world. He will continue working on his degree online while he is doing this, which he estimates will take about 20 hours per week.
Employment History
John is a committed worker and has been since age 14.
He started off as a volunteer at the capital of Texas zoo and after two years was promoted to be coordinator of the junior volunteers. He was a Zoo keeper for 4 years in total, part-time, age 14 through to 18.
He had a part-time student role for eight months at the animal resource Centre as a lab technician, assisting with research projects.
He took part in a further three months internship research project at the University of Alaska doing field research as part of a broader NASA project.
Along the way he had a volunteering role helping to restore habitat for bison, which involved clearing forest, and also briefly worked at a 7-Eleven community store.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCES
Farm / Livestock
his main experience of animals includes exposure to all aspects of zoo husbandry including work with cows, pigs, goats and sheep and many exotic animals. This was over a four-year period.
Equine / equestrian
no experience of riding or working with horses, but very keen to learn if possible.
Beginner
Driving & vehicles
Has had an automatic only driving licence for two years. Considers himself competent, safe and a quick learner. No experience yet of other vehicles.
Practical skills / trade skills
considers himself practical and has a range of experience with hand and power tools including brush cutters, chainsaws etc. he has been involved in building deer blinds, and some fencing repair work. Enjoys being practical and hands-on.
Domestic, cook and childcare etc
John’s family heritage is Italian, so he loves to cook and is pretty good at it.
He has some expensive childcare; his older brother has a two-year-old girl that he looks after from time to time.
Hospitality and customer service
no particular customer service experience apart from a short stint at 7-11, however he is used to working as part of professional and volunteer teams in well-established University organisations.

John is a passionate outdoorsman. He loves to hunt (shooting and archery), hike, fish and camp as well as go backpacking.
